Looks like I’ll be seeing Bruno

10th July 2009

Ebert likes Bruno

I don’t always agree with Roger Ebert’s movie choices, but I love his reviews because he’s very good at giving me a sense of whether or not I’d enjoy a particular film. I was on the fence about whether or not to see Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest movie, because I thought Borat was mostly boring and unfunny. But Bruno definitely sounds like a winner:

“Bruno” is a no-holds-barred comedy permitting several holds I had not dreamed of. The needle on my internal Laugh Meter went haywire, bouncing among hilarity, appreciation, shock, admiration, disgust, disbelief and appalled incredulity. Here is a film that is 82 minutes long and doesn’t contain 30 boring seconds.

Sold.

As for the new Transformers movie, I think I’ll pass:

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” is a horrible experience of unbearable length, briefly punctuated by three or four amusing moments. One of these involves a dog-like robot humping the leg of the heroine. Such are the meager joys. If you want to save yourself the ticket price, go into the kitchen, cue up a male choir singing the music of hell, and get a kid to start banging pots and pans together. Then close your eyes and use your imagination.

The plot is incomprehensible. The dialog of the Autobots®, Decepticons® and Otherbots® is meaningless word flap. Their accents are Brooklyese, British and hip-hop, as befits a race from the distant stars. Their appearance looks like junkyard throw-up. They are dumb as a rock. They share the film with human characters who are much more interesting, and that is very faint praise indeed.

‘Lioness’ premiers

7th May 2008

Lioness, a documentary about women serving in combat in Iraq, premiered at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival. I’m definitely going to be looking to see if it makes it to my area, or if I can find it on DVD later. I wasn’t able to find any reviews, but this article gives a brief rundown.

Women are officially barred from combat roles, but make up 2.3% of American combat deaths in Iraq. 16% of all American soldiers are women, and 10% of the force deployed in Iraq are women.

I Guess I’ll Be Taking That Gun Now.

6th April 2008

.

Charlton Heston is no longer among us. He had a commanding screen presence that he used to great effect in some of my all-time favorite films, including Ben-Hur, The Omega Man, Soylent Green, and Planet of the Apes. Pamdagon has a longer obit here.
